College/Career Readiness

Gilbert Intermediate promotes College/Career readiness to all students.  Middle school is a time to increase a student's awareness of the many different professions or careers available, and the pathways needed to obtain them.  Below you will see an outline of the college and career readiness guidelines for 5th and 6th grades here at Gilbert Intermediate.  Please feel free to review them and the Gilbert Intermediate College and Career Readiness brochure.

5th and 6th Grade - College Career Readiness

A new adventure awaits you in intermediate school.  Your road to your future continues to be paved by the choices you make each and every day.  These are the things you should work on during the 5th and 6th grade:

Student:

  • I will set my reading goals to include reading every day, improving my comprehension skills and sharing what I have read with my parents, teachers and/or friends.
  • I will learn about and make healthy choices to include nutrition, exercise and hygiene.
  • I will develop good study habits.
  • I will enter contests sponsored by my school; such as the science fair.
  • I will meet with my teacher and make a plan to improve my reading and math skills; especially addressing my weaknesses in those areas.
  • I will continue to develop my communication skills by making presentations to my classroom.
  • I will use a daily planner to help me organize and remember my assignments and projects.
  • I will write a letter to a college or university that I am interested in possibly attending and ask them to send me information about their school.

Parent / Guardian:

  • I will support and participate with my child on the above goals.
  • I will attend after school events as often as possible.
  • When going on a family trip, I will find a college campus along the way that we can visit and try to tour the campus.
  • I will maintain a routine for my child’s homework, and will ask specific questions about what he or she learned in school that day.
  • I will have my child read out loud to me at least twice a week for 20 minutes, or participate in a book study with my child on a book that we select together.
  • I will help my child maintain good attendance by getting them to school on time and promptly supplying written documentation when he or she is absent.
  • I will help my child discover various career opportunities in areas that interest them by looking at the searching websites of interest.
  • I will begin or continue planning for my child’s college education and start, or continue to contribute to a savings plan.
